Drug addict found guilty of killing her infant son, whom she considered was getting in the way of her love life

Being a parent is one of the most beautiful things that life can offer us because then our lives are more fulfilled than they were in every possible aspect, and rarely is a child a burden to any parent.

But there are always exceptions in our society that shock us and even make us shiver.

Such is the case where a middle-aged mother killed her child because she considered him an obstacle in her love affair at the time.

The mother, who was also struggling with her drug addiction at the time of her 17-month-old boy’s death, was recently found guilty of multiple charges, including murder, possession of methamphetamine, and endangering the welfare of a child.

In May 2018, officers from one township in New Jersey responded to a report of an unresponsive child on a lawn near his residence. The 17-month old boy, A. Reynolds, was pronounced dead a short time later.

The 44-year-old mother, H. Reynold, without being accused by anyone from the responding units at the scene for the death of her son, repeated on multiple occasions that she did not do anything wrong and that the child might have eaten something poisonous. Those allegations raised suspicions among responding officers, who started thinking that H. Reynolds had a role in her son’s death.

A post-mortem examination of the child’s body showed the cause of death was asphyxia and the manner of death was homicide.

Authorities in their investigation gathered statements from witnesses that H. Reynolds used methamphetamine the night before the death of her son. Some of the witnesses that authorities talked to said H. Reynolds thought her 17-month-old child, A. Reynolds, was hindering an affair she was having with her previous boyfriend.

Authorities were later able to get the text messages between H. Reynolds and the boyfriend with whom she was having an affair while her husband was working. Those messages clearly showed that H. Reynolds was becoming frustrated by the boyfriend’s lack of interest.

  1. Reynolds’ husband died on November 5, 2018. Her boyfriend at the time when the child died was also among the witnesses that spoke to police regarding A. Reynolds’ death.

The investigation into this complicated case lasted over a year, and authorities pressed charges against H. Reynolds in June, 2019.

The lead prosecutor in this case said that H. Reynolds used a cleansing wipe to suffocate her 17-month-old son, A. Reynolds, by placing it over his nose and mouth. Investigators say that they found acetone and isopropyl alcohol in the infant’s body.

Reynolds was also charged in May 2021, along with her new boyfriend, J. Cahallan, for conspiring to kill another man. The target was her old boyfriend, who spoke to police after her son’s death.

A jury convicted H. Reynolds on charges of murder, possession of methamphetamine, and endangering the welfare of a child stemming from the May 2018 death of her 17-month-old son, A. Reynolds.

Reynolds is scheduled to be sentenced in October 2022.
